Realising the impact water costs were having on their business, the Chief Executive contracted us to investigate and identify opportunities for savings.
From initial analysis of data, i.e. water bills and historical consumption levels across three hotels within the group, a series of initiatives were carried out.
Each hotel was issued with a spreadsheet to record consumption and business throughput. From collected data, performance indicators were established. This data highlighted one hotel having excessive water consumption.
The hotel in question was subjected to a comprehensive leakage detection survey carried out at midnight to take advantage of minimal throughput and activity. Under these conditions, a significant water loss was detected.
Saving achieved: £315,000 per anum
A comprehensive audit of all water delivery points, i.e. taps, storage tank and cistern overflows revealed opportunities for water savings. Water conservation devices were installed throughout the hotels. Storage tank overflow problems were eliminated.
Anticipated savings for first year: >£20,000
Rainwater run-off to public sewers is charged at 3.57p/£ Rateable Value. Two hotels are sited close to rivers. The possibility of private surface water sewers was investigated. At one hotel private drainage was confirmed. Discussions with the water authority with regard to the validity of the charge to this hotel are in progress.
Further savings anticipated: £...per anum
The significant reduction in water consumption at one hotel offers an opportunity for a reduction in water meter size and its fixed cost tariff.
Further savings anticipated: £...per anum
Mr Martin Kemp, Chief Executive for Cosmopolitan Hotels, is delighted with our success in reducing water costs to the business. He recently recommended our services to Greater Glasgow Hoteliers Association. As a result, we are now receiving enquiries from its members.
