Helensburgh Bicentenary Triathlon
25th August 2002

Start 8.30am (Juniors), 9am (Sprint)

TRI IT! - HAVE A GO

The race is part of the Helensburgh bicentenary celebrations, and will complement the Helensburgh 10k and half marathon by giving competitors the chance to take part in a sprint distance triathlon event. It will consist of a 750m swim, 20k (11 mile) cycle and 5k (3 mile) run, and is open to novices and experienced triathletes.

For juniors under 16 there will be an Aquathlon with a 250m swim and 3k run (no bike!). This will be held as part of the Scottish Triathlon Association Junior Aquathlon Series - serious stuff for some, with prizes at the end of the season.

There will also be relay team places, where teams of 3 will compete, with each competitor doing either the swim, the cycle, or the run.

Ironman Frank McShane is holding training sessions at Helensburgh Swimming Pool on Tuesday & Thursday nights from now until race day - all welcome - laned swim 7.45-8.45pm followed by a training run along the Bicentenary route. Contact Frank -at- lomond-tri.org.uk for more details.

Swim

Is 750m, 30 lengths of Helensburgh swimming pool, 4 or 5 to a lane - 3 heats, slowest swimmers in the first heat. The juniors will compete over 250m, 10 lengths. Out you get, then into the transition area, the quicker the better - the slower, the comfier and easier.

Transition T1

Get your cycling gear on, no hairdrying or deodorant here, just a little talc in your shoes so you can get them on. Helmets are a must - no helmet, no race. Sunglasses are also a must for the committed poseur. Wheel out your bike and on to the cycle.

Juniors - get your trainers and top on, and head for the run.

Cycle 20k

On your bike and turn left along West Clyde Street, heading west towards Rhu and the Navy base - a straight-out-and-back course, with a couple of little hills.

Over the hill at the Faslane Naval Base, down to the roundabout, taking care and keeping to the centre of the road as you approach the roundabout. Double back up the hill to Helensburgh. No drafting allowed on the bike section i.e. keep 10m (3 bike lengths) behind the cyclist in front, except when overtaking. Take special care at the junctions and with parked cars, in case a car pulls out or a door opens. Should be quiet on Sunday morning. Back up to the swimming pool, slow down, indicate and turn right into the swimming pool, obeying the highway code at all times. Off the bike and into transition again.

Transition T2

Rack your bike in the same place as you got it, helmet off (but keep on your shades!) and head for the run

Run - 5k

Come out of the transition area and on to the Esplanade. Notice how your legs are still trying to go round with a pedalling motion!! Keep to the left and head for Kidston Park. The Juniors turn around at the marshal and head back, the seniors keep going through Kidston Park, past the Helensburgh Sailing Club to the lay-by at the Naval Store Building. Turn around and head back. There will be a water station at the turnaround point. Wobble back towards the Pool. When you get near the end, make sure you put on a good show and sprint for the finish.

Finish

Collect your medal, polo shirt and goody bag … and you've tri-d it.
